How To Manage Gestational Sugar?

How to manage gestational sugar?

I don’t know about you but I’ve noticed that a lot more women are being diagnosed with gestational diabetes either with their first born or subsequent births. That was the case with me. And if you think that being a bit overweight will likely have gestational diabetes, guess again.

Nope, no, hindi, nay, n’t.

I have friends who are smaller than me in weight and size who had gestational diabetes.

How THEN do you control your gestational sugar to have a healthy pregnancy?

Or better yet, what are the ways you can do right now to reduce the risk of gestational diabetes?

Ways I wished I knew before I got pregnant.

Read on and we’ll find out.

What is gestational diabetes or gestational sugar?

According to the Mayo clinic “Gestational diabetes is diabetes diagnosed for the first time during pregnancy (gestation). Like other types of diabetes, gestational diabetes affects how your cells use sugar (glucose). Gestational diabetes causes high blood sugar that can affect your pregnancy and your baby’s health.”

During my  pregnancy, my nutritionist helped me  control gestational diabetes by educating me on how to journal my food intake daily, which food I can eat to control my sugar, how to test my glucose level and how to administer insulin. And here is how you can manage gestational diabetes by following these tips:

How to manage gestational diabetes with diet

  • From @the_dietologist eat whole grains to decrease insulin resistance.
  • Make sure your getting enough proteins and healthy fat,
  • Eat Low glycemic fruits like strawberries, apples and pears and vegetables such as tomatoes (this is a fruit), broccoli, lettuce and eggplants. Organic is always the best.

If for any reason after taking the glucose tolerance test you find out that you do have gestational diabetes, here is how to manage it. Speaking of the glucose tolerance test, I remember doing that test and how awful tasting it was and I had to drink within 5 minutes. That was awful.(Emoji face) I can still taste it. I empathize with you dear moms-to be-. I digress.

As promised, here are my tips for managing GB during pregnancy.

How to manage gestational diabetes during pregnancy

  • First of all, please don’t beat yourself up. Practice daily meditation, prayers and support from your husband does wonders.
  • Exercise for 15 minutes after eating if your doctor gives his/her OK. Personally I love the stationary bike, easy on my joints and burns calories and sugar faster and safer.
  • Eat more fiber and low carbohydrates

If I could turn back the clock, I wouldn’t want to have GB and would have done all I can to avoid it for my health’s sake and equally important, for my babies’ sake.

For you aspiring moms and moms-to-be, what are ways to reduce risk of gestational diabetes

Ways to reduce risk  of gestational diabetes

Even before we start thinking of having a baby. It’s important to start getting healthy. It’s not about losing too much weight, But more importantly it’s about being aware of what you eat on a daily basis.

  • Avoid high sugar and simple carbohydrates.
  • Be more physically active. During the pandemic if you’re working at home and at your computer most of the time, it won’t hurt to get up now and then, walk around,
  • Get out, soak up the sun and get some Vitamin D.
  • Enjoy nature. Take off your shoes, and practice grounding.(more of that in my other blog).
